On Wednesday, October 18 the church conference of North UMC approved a resolution for the sale of a portion of our land to be developed into commercial space and affordable housing through a partnership with Flaherty and Collins (click to read the resolution and to read a description of the land). The sale of property is contingent upon, among other things, the awarding of a tax credit for the funding of the project. The tax credits will be announced in February-March next year.
The church conference’s action is one step in a series of actions that will be taken throughout next year for the development of our vision of shalom in this community. Our hope is to solve the food desert in this neighborhood and to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty for many families in this community through various partnerships with service providers, Flaherty and Collins, and other agencies and organizations. Special word of thanks goes out to the Land Development Task Force and Pablo Svirsky, chair of the task force, for their dedication and hard work on this project. Let us continue to pray for this vital ministry.
